The games on paintbucket.dev collect nothing. They run entirely in your browser, they send nothing anywhere, and there is no analytics, no advertising and no third-party script on any of them.

GeoPinQuest is different, because it is sold through Steam, the App Store and Google Play, and it shows advertising and sells things inside itself. What that involves is set out below.

Who this is

paintbucket is a one-person game studio run by Richard Folea. It publishes the browser games on paintbucket.dev and its subdomains, and GeoPinQuest on Steam, the App Store and Google Play. If you want to reach a person about any of this, the address is paintbukkitgames@gmail.com and it is read by the person who wrote the games.

The browser games

Every game hosted on a paintbucket.dev subdomain runs wholly on your own machine. Nothing you do in them is transmitted anywhere, because there is nowhere for it to be transmitted to: there is no account, no server, no leaderboard and no database.

What is stored on your device

Some of the games save things locally, using your browser’s own storage, so that the game remembers where you were. That can include:

  • progress, high scores and personal bests
  • settings such as volume, difficulty and display options
  • whether you have seen a tutorial

This never leaves your device and cannot be read by anyone but you. It is kept in your browser, not by us, and clearing your browser’s site data deletes it permanently. There is no copy elsewhere, which also means there is no way to restore it.

What is not collected

No analytics. No advertising. No cookies for tracking. No fingerprinting. No third-party scripts of any kind. No account, email address or sign-in. If you play the browser games, we learn nothing about you at all.

Hosting

The site and the browser games are hosted on GitHub Pages. Like any web host, GitHub receives the requests your browser makes and may log technical information such as your IP address in order to serve the pages and protect the service. That is GitHub’s processing rather than ours, and it is covered by GitHub’s privacy statement. We do not receive those logs and have no access to them.

GeoPinQuest

GeoPinQuest is a paid game sold through Steam, the Apple App Store and Google Play. The game itself has no account system and stores your progress and settings on your own device. Three things about it are worth setting out plainly.

The stores

Your purchase is handled entirely by Valve, Apple or Google, depending on where you bought it. They take the payment, they hold the payment details, and we never see them. The same is true of anything bought inside the game: those purchases go through the store you installed it from, on the account you are already signed in to, and no payment detail ever reaches us. We receive sales and aggregate statistics from those platforms — how many copies sold, in which countries, refund rates — and nothing that identifies you as an individual. Their handling of your data is governed by Valve’s privacy policy, Apple’s privacy policy and Google’s privacy policy.

Advertising

GeoPinQuest shows advertising supplied by Google AdMob. To serve and measure those ads, Google collects information from the device, which can include a mobile advertising identifier, IP address, coarse location derived from it, device and operating system details, and which ads you were shown and interacted with. Google may use this to show you advertising based on your interests.

This collection is Google’s, under its own policies. We receive only aggregate reporting: totals for impressions, clicks and revenue. We do not receive, and cannot look up, anything about an individual player.

You can limit this. On iOS, the app must ask your permission before tracking you across other companies’ apps and websites, and you can decline; you can also turn it off for every app at once under Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking. On Android, Settings → Google → Ads lets you delete or opt out of the advertising ID. Declining does not stop ads appearing; it stops them being personalised.

Children

None of these games are directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided personal information through anything we publish, write to paintbukkitgames@gmail.com and it will be deleted.

Your rights

Depending on where you live — in particular under the GDPR in the UK and EU, or the CCPA in California — you have rights to access, correct, delete and export personal data held about you, and to object to its processing.

In practice, we hold almost nothing to which those rights can attach: the browser games give us no data at all, and the stores and ad network hold what they hold under their own policies rather than passing it to us. Where a request concerns data held by Apple, Valve or Google, it has to be made to them, because we cannot reach it. For anything we do hold, write to paintbukkitgames@gmail.com and it will be dealt with without charge.

We do not sell personal information, and we never have.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top of the page changes with it. If a change materially affects what is collected, it will be called out on the page rather than folded quietly into the text.
